Breast Implants or Fat Transplant – Making the Right Choice

/Breast Implants or Fat Transplant – Making the Right Choice

More and more women today are deciding to have breast augmentation, either for cosmetic reasons or for reconstructive reasons, that is, after the procedure of mastectomy, which is mostly done because of breast cancer. Whatever the reason, the main purpose of the surgery is making the breasts bigger and fuller. Women who decide on having the surgery want to have the body they have always wanted, and breast augmentation will give them confidence boost. Now, the question is what to choose – breast implants or fat transplant? If you are thinking about the surgery but you are not sure what choice is the right one, we provide you with the answers you need.

Breast Implants

Breast implants are artificial implants and they can be used for several reasons. You can use them because you are unsatisfied with the shape or size of your breasts, because of the changes due to weight loss, aging, or after having children, or you can use them because you have had a mastectomy and want to improve the way you look.

2You can choose between two types of breast implants and those are silicone gel implants and saline implants. Silicone gel implants can be round or contoured and they are pre-filled before they can be inserted. They are less likely to wrinkle than any other types of implants. However, one of the complications is that, if the implant happens to rupture, the silicone may spread outside the scar tissue and into the breast, which can result in the creating of lumps that can cause excruciating pain.

Saline implants have a strong silicone shell and you can choose to either have them pre-filled with saline salt water or to insert them first before filling them through a valve. They can also be round or contoured and the good thing about them is that, if the rupture happens, your body can safely absorb the saline solution because of its similarity with the body fluids. What’s not so good about this type of implants is that it is more prone to wrinkling, makes the breasts look less natural and it can rupture earlier than silicone implants.

Before you decide on having breast implants, you should consult with your surgeon first and find out everything there is to know about the procedure. You need to be aware of the potential risks and complications that may occur during and after surgery. Complications that may occur include the aforementioned implant rupture, the wrinkling of the rupture, infection after surgery, capsular contracture, and temporary or permanent change in the sensation of the nipple. The surgery is done under general anesthesia and the recovery process is 4 to 6 weeks.

The important thing to know about breast implants is that they do not last forever. The average expectancy is for them to last 10 to 15 years. Therefore, you will need to have further surgeries at some point, either to replace the implants or remove them due to potential rupture.

Breast Augmentation with Fat Transplant

Fat transplant is a completely non-invasive method of breast augmentation, a much safer solution than breast implants. It gives you a more natural look without having a foreign object in your body.

3Before the procedure, you need to consult with the surgeon in order to find out if you are the right candidate for the surgery. The procedure of fat transplant involves the removal of excess fat via liposuction before the fat is processed to remove all the impurities. The fat is then injected into the breasts, so there are no incisions and scars. This procedure is much safer than breast implants, because there is no risk of any leakage and there is no implant rupture. The surgery is done under general anesthesia and sedation, and the recovery time is 2 to 4 days.

If you are considering having breast augmentation, discuss it with your chosen doctor and gather all the information you need before the surgery. Do not feel pressured to make a hasty decision; think carefully and make the right choice for you.
